WINDOW DRESSINGS

Imagination and Inspiration are two key elements in creating great window dressings for any room.  Before embarking on the creative side, designers should always start with reviewing the “function” of the window.  Create an elevation (drawing of the window wall) and dimension every area of the window and wall.  Be sure to note how the window or door operates, where controls are located, and any other details that may control or interfere with the drapery design and installation.

Clarify for yourself exactly what the requirement will be for the window and window treatment.  For example, a bedroom window treatment will have different functions than a breakfast room window.  The bedroom window will need to add privacy, comfort, and tranquility at night while it controls light.  By day, the window covering will need to look bright and cheerful.  A breakfast room may need to be “for look only.”  In this case, the window covers can be stationary (non-operable), which is a great way to have a look and save money as less yardage is required.

Once the functions and mechanical parts have been determined, the fun of creating can begin.  The decorative possibilities are endless.  There are wonderful decorative rods and rings, an enormous selection of fabrics, trims, bullions, beads, fringes, sheers, tapestries, gauzes, silks, and styles to select from and combine together.  Learn about your fabrics and how they will perform.  For example, silks are wonderful to use, however they will sun fade, so use in locations where the sunlight is not direct.   Linens are gorgeous in texture and natural look and one of their characteristics is wrinkles.  Cottons, polyesters, and cotton/synthetic combinations may be best in some areas.
